Overview
For my PL practicum, I was enrolled in ENES210, an entrepreneurial class. In this class, we were immersed into thinking like entrepreneurs. We identified a problem in an area of interest, and we're charged with making a successful solution. Each week we had to further develop our solution, from partners and co-founders, all the way to an income statement.
What I learned.
I learned what truly goes into being an entrepreneur and creating a business. My problem that I identified was the extreme prices of membership at country clubs and the lack of growth in membership in recent years. To that, I proposed that country clubs install golf simulators in a bar/restaurant setting. this allows a more intimate setting for eating, with the benefit of playing some fun golf that is quick and easy. If you picture TopGolf, my model was similar, except it was at the country clubs themselves.
Growth
To the left is the income statement that I compiled for my startup company. This is something that helped me grow as a professional and student during this class. As a business major, I have used income statements countless times in other classes. However, I had never made an income statement for a company that I created, in which I had full autonomy over all decisions. I chose this because I showed the hard work that I put through 11 weeks of class to make my company successful.
Applying Practicum
Everything I learned in my practicum is very applicable to my future career. I plan on having a career in the business industry, and most every topic covered related to business principles. As a marketing manager, it is important to consider things like how to spend the marketing budget, which is something that we covered in this class.
Plans for rest of time at UMD
Currently I am a Marketing and OMBA (Operations Management Business Analytics) double major. I will continue on that path during my four remaining semesters here at Maryland. After graduation, I will either pursue my masters in business, or enter the workforce in the marketing industry. My ideal industry is sports marketing and analytics.

Through my experience in the public leadership program, I can confidently say that the skills I have obtained have prepared me for life after college. My critical thinking skills are more developed, my thought processes have become more elaborate and overall I believe that I am a more developed thinker.
In Public Leadership, I learned what leadership actually entails. It's more than what you see leaders do on TV. It's more than elected officials and top level executives. We encounter leadership everyday of our lives. I have learned what makes a leader effective and how to maintain connected to your target audience or community.
As someone that will ultimately strive for a position of leadership in the job world after college, everything that I learned in PL will be applicable and useful. Public leadership has taught me so much about how you treat those around you when given a position of power, and how to use power and leadership in several walks of life. I look forward to being able to apply these concepts to the real world after college.
